BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) - Former West Indies great Joel Garner has been named chief selector of the Barbados national team, the island's cricket association announced yesterday.

Garner, a former fast bowler who played 58 Test matches for the West Indies between 1977 and 1987, will lead the island's talent scouting and player selection in the high-profile job, a statement said.

Garner, 52, joins two other former West Indies players on the selection panel, Philo Wallace and Thelston Payne.

Their first task will be naming a squad for the preliminaries of the President's Cup tournament, to be played in Barbados from October 2-9.

Since retiring from international cricket, Garner, a former Barbados captain, has held several administrative positions in the sport, including a stint as a board member of the West Indies Cricket Board.
