Sensei Garry Turnbull was awarded his Seventh Degree Black Belt at the recently held International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) Master Camp in Philadelphia, USA, according to a report by the communication company, Interlinc.

This achievement now makes him the leading Karatekat in Jamaica.
Sensei Turnbull is the chairman and chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association of Jamaica (Shotokan), a position he has held since 1985. He was a co-founding member of the association back in 1974 and has had a distinguished career both as a competitor and instructor.

As a competitor, Sensei Turnbull was the Caribbean Individual Kata champion for eight years and was also the team leader of the very successful Kata team during the same period. Additionally, he has coached the Jamaican team to many victories over the years at the Caribbean and Pan American level.

Sensei Turnbull, a qualified international instructor of the Japan Karate Association, headquartered in Tokyo, has assisted hundreds of Jamaican men, women and children in achieving the coveted Black Belt in Karate through his very professional teaching methods.

Karate has been a passion of Sensei Turnbull since he first started to train at CAST (now UTech) back in the late 1960s and his distinguished career as a karate student/instructor has taken a smooth path to his present position. He was awarded his First Degree Black belt in 1975 and has passed each examination at the first attempt over the past 31 years.

Garry Turnbull is a Civil Engineer by profession and Karate has been his hobby and a way of life since he first started to train back in 1968.
