August Town beat Reno for fifth win
Livingston Scott, Observer staff reporter
Thursday, April 12, 2007

Debutants August Town continued their impressive run in the third round of the NPL by beating third-placed Reno 1-0 at Barbican Sport Complex yesterday for their fifth win from six games in this round.

Kadian Lecky scored 13 minutes into the second half after both teams had good chances throughout. The win also pushed August Town to 37 points.

Playing with the wind, Reno had the first two chances through shots from Martin Williams and Kirk Wright.
But the hosts came into their own despite going against the wind and had good opportunities through Ross Burton and Lecky.

August Town also had the ball in the net twice, but Lecky and Aphas Bernard were ruled offside on both occasions.
Immediately after the break, August Town nearly took the lead when Reno goalkeeper Kenrick Blair misjudged a ball which went over his head and hit the base of the post.
However, as Reno struggled to defend against the heavy wind, Lecky latched onto a long ball and fired a shot into Blair's far post to put his team ahead.

The home team maintained control afterwards and should have gone further ahead 10 minutes from time, but Aheem Thenstead's lob was too heavy, with only Blair to beat.
A minute later, Kendrick Quarrie picked out Wright on top of the box, but the tame volley was easily taken by Damion Campbell in goal.

With time running out, Mario Harrison had a superb chance to get an equaliser, but he volleyed just wide from 10 yards.
August Town's coach Hugh McCarthy thought his team should have won by a wider margin.

"We're accustomed to Reno and the way they play and I thought we should have won by more than just one goal. But we're grateful for the result... because we want to finish as far up... as possible as a first-time team in the league," he said.
"Based on the first half we created a number of chances and failed to convert any... they converted one of their chances and that made the difference," said Reno's coach Wendell Downswell.
