Simpson returns!
... Competes tomorrow for first time since hip injury
DANIA BOGLE, Observer staff reporter

SIMPSON. suffered a hip injury over a month ago

TOP female sprinter of 2006, Sherone Simpson, will run in the women's 100m at tomorrow's Herculis IAAF Super Grand Prix Meeting in Monaco in her first race since suffering a hip injury over a month ago.

Simpson, the Commonwealth Games 200m champion, was apparently affected by the injury, slowing down dramatically to finish last in the women's 100 metres at the Mobil Bislett Golden League meeting in Oslo, Norway on June 15th.
The athlete subsequently withdrew from the Jamaica National Championships a week later.

MVP club president Bruce James told the Observer yesterday that Simpson, who had resumed training, was "ready to race" and would be in the starting line-up for tomorrow's event.

Other MVP group members, World Championships silver medallist Michael Frater and Nesta Carter in the men's 100m, and Melaine Walker in the 400m hurdles will also compete. The quartet left training camp in Italy for Monaco on Sunday.

Simpson, the 2004 Athens Olympics 4x100m gold medallist, despite missing the national champs, could still be selected for the IAAF World Championships of Athletics in Osaka, Japan, next month, at the discretion of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA).

According to JAAA team selection criteria, athletes placing in first to third positions will be selected, provided that they have attained the qualifying 'A' standard for the competition, while athletes with top three world ranking who are ill or injured at the time of the National Championships may still be considered for selection, but must prove their world ranking form prior to the final submission of the entries for the competition

Olympics 200m champion Veronica Campbell won the women's 100m at National Champs on June 23, clocking a world leading 10.89 seconds to finish ahead of Kerron Stewart (11.03) and Sherri-Ann Brooks (11.05).
