Friday, November 02, 2007

ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) - Legendary West Indies pacer Andy Roberts and sprint champion Brendan Christian were among 54 people honoured yesterday by the Antigua & Barbuda government during its 26th Independence anniversary celebrations.

Roberts, who spearheaded the famed four-pronged pace attack in the 1970s and 1980s, was the recipient of the Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit KCN, the country's third highest award.

Christian, a gold medallist in the 200 metres and bronze winner in the 100 metres at July's Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, received the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage.

Sailor Karl James, who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Central American & Caribbean Games, was another athlete honoured. He received the Grand Cross of the
Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage GOH.

Another sailor, Hugh Bailey, who helped to pioneer the country's popular Sailing Week regatta, was awarded a Knighthood.

Austin Edwards, a retired veteran umpire at the national and Leeward Islands level, became a member
of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage.

The awardees were congratulated by Governor General Dame Louis Lake-Tack during the Independence Ceremonial Parade at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
