Quarter-final showdowns in D-Cup
BY PAUL A REID Observer Writer reidp@jamaicaobserver.com

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Garvey Maceo High and former champions Rusea's could all but book their places in the semifinals of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup today if they can score their second win in the quarter-final round.

Garvey Maceo, the Ben Francis Knock Out champions and unbeaten in 18 games dating back to last season, will play Cornwall College at Jarrett Park while Rusea's return to the St Elizabeth Technical High grounds where they will face defending champions Glenmuir.

Both were winners in Thursday's first set of game in the quarterfinals, Garvey Maceo thrashed Fair Prospect 6-0 while Rusea's edged Munro 1-0.

In the other two games scheduled, Fair Prospect will take on Manchester High at Carder Park while Clarendon College and Munro will meet at Brancourt.

Garvey Maceo will return to Jarrett Park where they beat Rusea's earlier this season to win the Ben Francis Knock-out and will hope for the same result.

After two 1-0 wins in the Inter-Zone round, the Jeffrey Hewitt-coached team exploded for six goals against Fair Prospect on Thursday with top striker Ashton Bennett getting five.

Bennett is having a second straight season where he has scored over 25 goals with 35 in all so far this season. Only nine of these goals will go towards the scoring title, however, as ISSA only recognises goals scored from the Inter-Zone round towards the title.

The Cornwall defence will have their hands full in trying to contain Bennett as well as Andre Prince, Daniel Callaghan and Upstan Edwards.

Cornwall scrambled a point from their come-from-behind 1-1 draw against Manchester High at Kirkvine on Thursday, thanks to an own goal after going behind from as early as the ninth minute.

At 'home' and in front of what is expected to be a big crowd, Cornwall are expected to put on an improved performance if they are to stay in contention for a semi-final place.

Jason King is the unlikely scoring leader for Cornwall with four goals so far, but Radcliff Hall and Michael Hall are expected to lead the attack with Edward Campbell always a scoring threat.

Rusea's escaped with a win over Munro in sloppy underfoot conditions on Thursday, but will have their hands full against the champions who gave up a late goal to draw against Clarendon College on Thursday.

Glenmuir will be without national Under-20 striker, Draion McNain, who was sent off against Clarendon, but will have the likes of John-Ross Doyley, James Francis, Ramon Whittaker and Ricardo Webb to go up against the Rusea's defence.

Rusea's have been unbeaten since their loss in the Ben Francis KO finals and have found ways of winning against the odds.

Ricano Brown has earned a starting spot on the front line along with Roydell Moncrieff and Andre Atkinson as they seek to avenge last year's 2-0 whipping by Glenmuir at this same stage.

The Clarendon College-Munro game will be another interesting clash between two former champions who must win to keep their slim hopes alive.

Clarendon have struggled since the end of the first round, but can't be counted out with the likes of Damali Samuels who has scored 28 goals so far this season, but just two since the start of the Inter-Zone round.

Munro's hopes will ride on the shoulders of Javed Genus, Moses Watkiss and Kriswayne Wallace.

Fair Prospect will have territorial advantage at Carder Park in their first meeting with Manchester High who will be cursing their luck after allowing Cornwall to escape on Thursday.

Today's games:
Fair Prospect vs Manchester @ Cader Park (3:00 pm)
Cornwall College vs Garvey Maceo @ Jarrett Park (3:00 pm)
Clarendon College vs Munro @ Brancourt Field (3:00 pm)
Rusea's vs Glenmuir @ STETHS (3:00 pm)
