Blake, Russell land 100m gold at CARIFTA
CMC
Sunday, March 23, 2008

BASSETTERE, St Kitts (CMC) - Hot favourite, Yohan Blake, posted a predictable victory in landing the marquee Under-20 Boys' 100-metre title on the opening day of the 2008 CARIFTA Games yesterday.

Blake retained his title with a 10.32 clocking, significantly slower than his 2007 World Junior-leading and championship record time of 10.11 seconds, but good enough to top his teammate Dexter Lee at the Jubilee Stadium.

His teammate, Carrie Russell, captured the Under-20 Girls' 100m gold, while Trinidad & Tobago's Michelle Lee-Ayhe and Bahamian Geno Jones copped the junior (Under-17) sprint titles.

Blake shrugged off a strong mid-race challenge from Lee and won with authority in the end.

Lee (10.48) took second with T&T's Joel Dillon third in 10.57.

Russell was also tested before snatching victory in 11:39, edging local St Kitts & Nevis star, Meritzer Williams (11:41), with Bahamian Sheniqua Ferguson third in 11:50.

Lee-Ahye retained her Under-17 Girls' title in 11:66 seconds, easily topping the US Virgin Islands' Alison Peter (11:91) and Bahamian long jump champion V'Alonnee Robinson (11:91)

Robinson took the Under-17 Girls' long jump at 5.82 metres ahead of the Jamaican pair of Janieve Russell (5:72m) and Rochelle Farquharson (5:67m).

Jones clocked 10:76 to win the Under-17 Boys' 100 ahead of T&T's Moriba Morain (10:84).

Grenada advertised their growing reputation at these games by taking two of the 400-metre titles.

IAAF World Youth silver medallist Kirani James landed the Under-17 Boys' crown in 47:87 ahead of Jamaica's Javere Bell (49:08) and Nolan Williams (49:34) and his Grenada teammate Rondell Bartholemew ran 46.86 for the Under-20 Boys' gold ahead of T&T's Jovon Toppin (47:26).
