WORLD indoor and outdoor shot put finalist, Dorian Scott, says he is on target to win Jamaica's first medal in the event at this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing, China, after producing a world-leading mark of 21.45 metres in Tallahassee, USA, last Friday.
"I definitely feel that I'm going to finish in the top three at the Olympics," Scott said, noting that he has learnt from his mistakes at last year's World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan - where he failed to register a mark in the final - and this year's World Indoor meet in Valencia, Spain, where he finished sixth in the final.
"The way I analyse how I've been throwing, especially coming out of the World Indoors, I made a few adjustments and they've been working 100 per cent," he said, referring to a change in his technique.
"It means that basically everything I'm doing is working," he said.
One week after throwing 20.65 metres to break his own national record of 20.60m established last July, Scott - the 2006 Commonwealth silver medallist - returned a massive 21.45m for the top distance this season.
The effort of the 2007 Pan Am silver medallist replaced that of Australian Martin Scott (21.27) on the IAAF list.
"I'm not really surprise because I've been throwing 21 metres quite a bit in practice over the last two weeks," the Jamaican explained.
"Honestly, when I saw 21.45, I felt like 22 (metres) wasn't that far away at all, so I just plan to move to the next plateau, which is 22 metres, and just try to hit that," Scott added.
The brawny athlete, who is now working with veteran track & field agent, Mark Black, said his next outing will be the Drakes Relays on April 25.
Black also works with Jamaican sprinters Dwight Thomas and Chris Williams, half-miler Kenia Sinclair, as well as American Xavier Carter.
Scott, who is also scheduled to compete at the Jamaica International Invitational meet on May 3 at the National Stadium, believes he will be in peak condition by the time the Olympics rolls around between August 8-24 in China.
"I know I'm going to be in good competitions against the top guys leading into the Olympics, so I'm completely confident that I'm going to be well seasoned and ready to go in Beijing," he said.
"It's going to be nothing but positivity for me going into the future."
