Wadadah, Negril to contest Super League finals

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Defending champions Granville FC were knocked out of the Captain's Bakery Western Confederation Super League semi-finals on Saturday, beaten 4-3 on penalty kicks by Wadadah in their return leg semi-finals.

The teams, which had played to a 0-0 first leg draw, were tied at 2-2 after regulation and extra-time on Saturday.

Wadadah will meet former winners Negril FC in the two-way finals set for the next two Saturdays after the Westmoreland team beat Salt Spring 2-0 on Saturday for a 3-2 aggregate win.

Salt Spring had won the first leg 2-1 at Frome the previous week.

Granville, who had beaten national Knockout champions Portmore United three days earlier in the COK Champions Cup Knockout on penalty-kicks, dominated the game for long periods and were the better team on the night.

They managed to dig themselves out of a hole to lead 2-1 and with less than a minute to go, goalkeeper Nicholas Steadman lost concentration, dropped a lazy cross from Raphael Palmer into the goal and forced extra-time.

Earlier, Shannon Brown, who had an outstanding game as marker, allowed Curtis Palmer to get away mid way the Granville half. The lanky striker dribbled to his right and with Steadman committed, lobbed the ball delicately back to the left and under the cross bar in the 59th minute.

Granville, who looked well coordinated in attack throughout the entire game, hit back decisively, scoring twice in a matter of four minutes to take the lead. Jermaine Anderson converted a hotly disputed penalty in the 75th minute and a well-taken Christopher Currie goal in the 79th, rocketing the ball into the net past Tristan Bernard from the left side, seemed enough to take Granville into back-to-back finals.

Steadman, who had replaced the injured Loxley Reid late in the game against Portmore and who held his own against Wadadah, appeared to lose sight of the ball which hit his hands then bounced over his arms much to the agony of his teammates and the entire Granville bench.

Twenty minutes of extra time failed to decide the game and while Wadadah converted the first four spot kicks Granville missed their first and last kicks.

Garfield Watson, Rohan Reid, Lennox Whittingham and Raphael Palmer scored for Wadadah, while Jason Rose, Damion Reid and Jermaine Anderson scored for Granville.
Currie sent his shot wide, while Davion Thelwell hit the cross bar with his fifth shot.

In the first game of the double header, Rohan Campbell scored in the fourth minute and Michael Cooper got the winner in time added after the tie appeared to be headed to extra time.
