Veteran Smith retains triple jump title
BY PAUL A REID Observer Writer reidp@jamaicaobserver.com
Sunday, June 29, 2008

Former World champion and national record-holder, Trecia-Kay Smith, shook of rust and inactivity to win the triple jump last night at the National Senior Championships at the National Sstadium.

Smith, who has been dogged by injuries this year and was a late entry to the meet, leaped a sub-par 13.61m to retain her title.

It wasn't a pretty win for the Jamaican record-holder (15.16m from 2004) as she had three foul jumps and passed on her final attempt after posting the winning jump on her second attempt.

Louisiana State University's Andrea Linton was second with 13.04m and Renee White of the University of Iowa third in 12.82m.
Zara Northover retained her shot put title after heaving 16.78m, beating Nadia Alexander, who threw 15.90m, while Genneva Greaves was third with 13.46m

Former Mannings School athlete, Hickel Woolery, won his first Senior title when he took the discus with 56.69m ahead of Odayne Richards, 48,69m, with Noel Facey in 43.88m.
David Edwards-Brennan won the high jump with a mark of 2.05m.

On today's third and final day, the Men' long jump is expected to be the most competitive of the five field events listed and in the absence of many-time national champion and record-holder, James Beckford, Herbert McGregor - who has a personal best 8.08m this year - is hoping to earn his first Olympic berth.

McGregor's mark is just better than the Olympic 'B' standard of 8.05m and is the fifth best mark ever by a Jamaican male athlete.
A number of other jumpers come into the event with season's best marks of just under 8.00m, including Texas A&M's Julian Reid with 7.97m, Nicholas Gordon of the University of Nebraska and Dwaine Banton, both with 7.91m, and Tarik Batchelor of Kingston College, who is a member of the team to the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Reid won Friday night's triple jump event in 15.95m, beating Florida State University's Rayon Taylor's 15.93m, while Wilbert Walker of Lincoln University was third in 15.87m.

National record-holder and former world leader Dorian Scott, who has already made the Olympic A standard (20.30m) in the shot put, will start as odds on favorite to defend his title.

Scott has broken the national Senior record twice this season, taking it from 20.60m when he threw 20.65m, and then 21.45m, both done in meets at his base in Tallahassee, Florida.

There will also be competition in the Men's and Women's hammer throw this morning; the Women's javelin and high jump in the afternoon.
