Gayle quits!
Steps down as captain of Windies team

Monday, July 28, 2008

Reliable Observer sources last night confirmed that West Indies cricket captain, Jamaican Chris Gayle, tendered a letter of resignation with immediate effect to the West Indies Cricket Board's (WICB) CEO Dr Donald Peters yesterday.

The reason for his resignation was unclear last night, and the hard-hitting, left-handed opening batsman could not be reached for a comment.

GAYLE . complained about the selectors' policy of experimenting with several youngsters against the Australians

Over the weekend news emerged in the Eastern Caribbean that the tall Jamaican was likely to step down from the captaincy, but that the board had yet to receive official word from him.

According to a report in the Trinidad Express on Saturday, Dr Peters confirmed that the player had indicated that he would not be "making himself available for the captaincy". The West Indies' next assignment is the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September.

Gayle was given the captaincy in the absence of injured Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan during the tour of England last year, and he led the team successfully in the ODI series. And he was retained as captain ahead of Sarwan for the home series against Sri Lanka and Australia.

He has had mixed results since being named captain of the team, winning two Tests from five with an average of 36.11, just below his overall Test average of 38.12. He has won seven One-Day Internationals from 17 matches, with an average of 47.33, above his overall average of 38.84.

During his tenure as captain he led the West Indies to an away Test victory against South Africa, the regional team's first away victory against one of the top-ranked teams in eight years, though the West Indies lost the series 1-2.

Gayle led the West Indies to a ODI series victories away to England last year and at home against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

The West Indies were recently drubbed 0-2 and 0-5 by world champions Australia in the Test and ODI series, and Gayle complained about the selectors' policy of experimenting with several youngsters against the Australians.

Gayle has also been plagued with injuries during his short stint as captain, having to return home from the tour of South Africa after suffering a thumb and hamstring injury. He also suffered a groin injury during this period.
