BEIJING, China - World res-pected sprint coach, Glen Mills, who conditioned Jamaican Usain Bolt in his 100/200 double sprint victory in record times 9.69 and 19.30 seconds, respectively, says his prodigy will end the 29th Olympiad with three gold medals.
"Everything was done, I would say, scientifically correct and he peaked at the right time and he's in great shape and I'm looking forward to him coming back in the relay and for us (Jamaica) to win that too," Mills told the Observer moments after Bolt shaved 0.02 seconds off American Michael Johnson's 12-year-old record on yesterday's sixth day of track and field competition at the 91,000 capacity Bird's Nest Stadium.
Running in lane five, the long-striding Bolt destroyed the strong field of sprinters that comprised Shawn Crawford, Walter Dix and Wallace Spearmon of the USA; Brian Dzingai of Zimbabwe; Britain's Christian Malcolm; Kim Collins of St Kitts/Nevis and Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles. The lanky sprinter covered the field by 70-metre mark before blasting down the home straight to stop the clock at 19.30secs into a head wind of (-0.9 m/s).
Defending champion Crawford took silver in 19.96secs, and Dix the bronze a further 0.02 seconds back following the disqualifications of Martina and World 2007 bronze medallist Spearmon for lane violations. It was Bolt's eight round of sprinting in five days over a six-day period.
The William Knibb old boy had clocked 9.69 on Saturday despite celebrating from the 80-metres mark to break his own record of 9.72 done in New York on Saturday by 0.03. It was the first time that a Jamaican man or woman was winning the Olympic 100 metres.
"I've always personally felt that I'm one of the best (coaches) in the world and tonight (last night) I think that I've proved that I am the best ever," said Mills, who turned out Bolt in unbeatable form on the biggest sporting stage. Bolt is also the record holder of the World Youth (20.13) and World Junior (19.93) 200m
"I have always said that I could coach anybody in the world if I'm given talent," added the veteran coach, who also conditioned Collins to the 2003 world 100m title.
"Usain, I know as his coach is 100 per cent clean. the thing he drinks most is Ensure (because) he's into the vitamins, so we're very happy with the achievements and I'm very happy with the work that I've done," Mills declared.
Asked if Bolt would be considered for a leg on the mile relay team for a shot at winning four gold medals, Jamaica's head coach replied, "No, that is never a consideration (because) I'm not trying to mash him up in one year."
