Jamaican Johnson scores in MLS for San Jose
CMC
Saturday, October 04, 2008

FRISCO, Texas (CMC) - Jamaican Ryan Johnson played the "super sub" role and scored for visiting San Jose Earthquakes in a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas in US Major League Soccer (MLS) on Thursday night.

Johnson dramatically scored within a minute of entering play, but Kenny Cooper netted a last-minute penalty to earn a point for FC Dallas in the midweek fixture that brought play-off seeking teams together at Pizza Hut Park.

The result pushed San Jose up to 30 points and alone into sixth place in the Western Conference standings, one point ahead of Los Angeles Galaxy.

FCD increased their tally to 34 and into a three-way tie for third with the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake (RSL).
San Jose coach Frank Yallop made the game's first substitution in the 57th minute, pulling off Ronnie O'Brien and inserting Johnson.

The midfielder, who made one international appearance for the Reggae Boyz - against the USA - in 2006, made his coach look like a genius by scoring in the 58th minute.
San Jose Defender played a long pass from deep and the Trinidad and Tobago-born forward Scott Sealy allowed the ball to bounce over his head through to his teammate Johnson, who sprinted away from the FCD defence for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Dario Sala.

From just outside of the FCD box, Johnson hit a low left-footer past Sala for his fifth goal of the year.

San Jose missed snatching three valuable points when they gave up a penalty in the 89th minute for a hand-ball and Cooper scored from the spot.

FCD also had Jamaican-born Jeff Cunningham in the line-up.
