WOLMER's yesterday launched its inaugural Cran-Wata 5 Kilometre road race to be held on November 23 at 4:00 pm.
The launch took place at the school's Heroes' Circle campus which will also serve as the start and finish post for
the race.

Race organising committee member, David Riley, said the idea behind the meet stemmed from the desire to have the school play a part in track & field locally and also to re-establish itself on the local athletics calendar.

Wolmer's formerly staged the John Wolmer track meet which has not been held for several years. The organisers are aiming for 500 participants, with 140 teams as well as schools being invited.

The race will commence at the gate of Wolmer's Boys' school; east along Heroes Circle; up Marescaux Road to Cross Roads to the Texaco service station; down Slipe Road; left at Torrington Bridge; right along Heroes' Circle to King Street; left along North Street; left up Duke Street past the former Jamintel Building; then right along Heroes' Circle past the Ministry of Education building and end at the entrance to the Wolmer's Boys' School.

There will be rehydration stops at the 2.2 km and four km points.

Prizes will be awarded in the 15-19 age group with trophy and a gift going to the first-place finisher, 20-35, and Over 35 years for a top prize of $10,000 in each category, with $5,000, and $3,000 going to second and third places respectively.

Registration closes next Wednesday, November 19, and will cost $300 per adult. Same day registration will be allowed between 2:00 and 3:00 pm on race day and will cost $500 for adults and $300 for children under 19.

Wisynco director of sales, Halcott Holness, also announced that the company, which through its Cran-Wata brand is sponsoring the event to the tune of $150,000, will also be funding the renovation of the Wolmer's Boys' gym.
