Walker rides four-timer, highlights race meet
Hurbun Williams, Observer writer
Thursday, November 20, 2008

Champion and leading rider, Omar Walker, rode four winners from seven rides to illuminate an otherwise dull nine-race midweek card on which He's Really Ok beat the 4-5 favourite, Naval Commander, to win the $550,000 Abe Grannum Memorial Cup native-bred two-year-old feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Walker was breaking a short lean spell of riding multiple winners when he booted home Queen Of My Heart in the second race for trainer Robert Darby Snr; Little Wasp in the third for champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta; Don't Stay Naked in the seventh for trainer Leroy Fearon, and crowned the evening's performance with a brilliant ride aboard Outstanding in the eighth race to win $605,000 Open Allowance event by a head from the imported Smoothability over 1,000 metres.

Outstanding, who carried 57.0kg to Smoothability's 51.0kg is trained Gresford Smith.

Walker, with just 11 racedays remaining in the racing season looks certain to successfully retain his jockeys' championship as the four-timer further advanced his tally of winners for the season to 127 from 448 rides.

Dane Nelson, who is his closest rival, rode only one winner on the programme to be 34 winners away on 93 from 481 rides for the season.

Meanwhile, He's Really Ok, trained by Fredrick Watson for owner Patrick Smellie, who took the lead soon after the starter sent them on their way showed his rivals a clean pair of hooves back to the line to open his winning account the second time of asking.

Installed the 2-1 second favourite and ridden by Elvis Murray, He's Really Ok ran 1,400 metres in 1:29.1 to beat Naval Commander, the mount of Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas, by 2 3/4 lengths in the field of nine.

First-time runner Johnny Appleseed closed rapidly to be third at odds of 19-1 under Larris Allen with Therealprince well supported at 9-1 finishing fourth partnered by Shane Ellis.

He's Really Ok, a roan colt by He'stherealthing out of Ok Mom (Slick Trick), was bred by Patrick Smellie and earned $300,300 as the winners share for earnings of $338,950 from two career starts.
