OLYMPIANS Vilma Charlton and Keith Gardner were among three persons honoured by the Jamalco Sports Club at the 17th JAAA/PUMA Development Meet in Clarendon yesterday.

The other honouree was Stanley Redwine, head coach of University of Kansas who was a special guest of the organisers.

Director of the meet, Neville Myton, told the Sunday Observer that honouring Gardner and Charlton was in keeping with Jamalco's drive to recognise the contribution of senior Olympians.

"We should start to honour our older athletes... I never got to the (Herb) McKenleys and the (Arthur) Wints and the (George) Rhodens, but after that step was George Kerr, who we did last year and now it's Keith Gardner and Vilma Charlton and we hope to work our way right up to the present set of athletes," Myton said.

"I think it's something we need to do to make them know that athletics is fabulous now, but athletics was (also) fabulous before," he added, noting that the Olympians received a citation of their accomplishments, plaques and hi-tech cell phones from Digicel.

In addition to winning a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the Rome Olympics in 1960, Gardner - who is recognised as one of Jamaica's best sprint hurdlers of all time - won three gold, one silver and a bronze medal at the British Empire Commonwealth Games in 1954 and 1958.

Gardner, 79, won gold medals in the 120 yard hurdles, while the other gold came in the 100- yard dash.

Charlton, 62, who is currently the third vice-president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association, is a three-time Olympian, having competed at the Games in 1964, 1968 and 1972.
