Financial planners Pan Caribbean, developing a reputation as a well-organised machine, made good on their target to raise $14 million for the Bustamante Hospital for Children at the 11th staging of the Sigma Corporate Run 5K Extravaganza yesterday.
With a record 9,550 participants - 3,794 runners, 5,745 walkers, and 11 wheelchair competitors - Pan Caribbean raised $14.258 million.
Jamaica's mega artiste Shaggy, involved with bringing aid to the Bustamante Hospital through his Save A Life video and the Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation, briefly entertained the thousands at Emancipation Park after the race.
Kingston College's 19-year-old Dwayne Powell and 15-year-old Sherene White of Holmwood Technical topped the overall male and female categories.
Powell clocked 18 minutes 25 seconds, beating Horace Burey (18:50), and Wilfred Wilson (19:00).
White won ahead of Mashere Harrison (21:48) and Kimberly Reid (22:06).
Beginning at Pan Caribbean office at Knutsford Boulevard, the Sigma 5K participants went on to Waterloo Road, West Kings House Road, then on to Constant Spring Road, left to Suthermere then Hope Road, to Winchester Road, on to Ruthven Road, Half-Way-Tree Road, and ending on Oxford Road beside Emancipation Park.
"I managed to get a good start, and took the lead. By the Canadian embassy I never thought there would be any challenge so I held the pace. Andrew Gutzmore later came at me but I shook him off at the last 1K and that's how I was able to win the race," Powell said.
On her win, White said: "At the start of the race I was thirsty, but I decided to keep up with the men. A lady on a bicycle urged me on as a teammate was about to pass me. With two minutes to go I run, run,! run, and saw the finish line."
White also won the Under-16 female category, ahead of Kimberly Reid and Tannisha Carnegie; while Lechester Beech captured the Under-16 male section, beating Lancelot Jr Williams and Kemboi Gutzmore.
David Christie and Vinette Green won the male and female wheelchair races.
Wilfred Wilson of Urban Development Corporation captured the male overall Corporate Run and Harrison the equivalent female section.
Allan Beckford of Jamaica National Building Society cruised home for the Executive Management Run, thrashing Sherlock Glenister of National Land Agency and Marc Melville of Tropical Battery Company.
For those who walked, Andrew Newell and Danielle Murray won the male and female open, and Cecil Nuefville of Tropical Foods and Nyasha Heaven of Financial Services Commission the Corporate male and female sections.
Jamaica Biscuit Company, with 511 entrants, was the largest team while Main Event Entertainment Group took the Best T-Shirt Award, with Jamaica Biscuit second and Wisynco Group Ltd third.
