CMC
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
NEW YORK CITY, USA (CMC) - Women's Olympic 100 metres champion Shelly-Ann Fraser and former men's 100m world record-holder Asafa Powell have signed up to appear at the 2009 Reebok Grand Prix, organisers announced yesterday.
Fraser was the first Jamaican woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100m, when she bested compatriots Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson at last year's Beijing Olympics.
Her winning time of 10.78 seconds was a personal best and 0.20 seconds faster than her Jamaican teammates.
Compatriot and MVP club-mate Powell held the 100m World record from June 2005 to May 2008 and has consistently broken the 10-second barrier in competition. He has run under 9.80 secs more times than all other sprinters combined.
The two-time Olympian won a gold medal and helped the Jamaica team break the 4x100m relay World record, when he anchored the team in Beijing to victory.
The Reebok Grand Prix is the fourth stop of USA Track & Field's Championship Series and will be held on May 30 at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
The meet features Olympic stars, top high school athletes and a Fastest Kid in New York competition for seven-and eight-year-olds.
Events include men's and women's sprints, hurdles, middle-distance races, the pole vault and invitational high school races.
Powell still looking to make Qatar Super Grand Prix
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) - Asafa Powell plans to honour his obligation at the IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting in Doha, Qatar, on May 8.
This follows the former World 100 metres recordholder limping off the track after anchoring the Jamaica men's 4x100m relay team at the 115th Penn Relays last Saturday.
Paul Doyle, Powell's agent, played down the injury, after the big sprinter jogged to the finish line in obvious discomfort.
He added that the sprinter had told them that morning he felt much better and wanted to run the relay in Philadelphia.
Powell missed the U-Tech Classic at the National Stadium the previous weekend put on by his club MVP, and rejected claims that he was injured, although he ran with bandages on his left ankle and hobbled away from the track before he was seen icing the area later.
The Qatar Super Grand Prix meet is part of the 25 fixtures of 2009 IAAF World Athletics Tour.
