Petite Fraser looks to 'Worlds' with big appetite

Monday, June 29, 2009

Fresh from clocking a world-leading 10.88 seconds into a negative wind of (-1.5) to win the 100-metre title at the National Championships on Saturday, Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser is ready to reclaim top spot in the marquee event in Berlin.

Shelly-Ann Fraser celebrates with the Jamaican flag after winning the women's 100m gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in China last summer.

"I'm excited, who knows what the future holds come Berlin," Fraser told the Observer.

"But I'm going out there with only one man behind me, and that's God, and I'm just going out there to do my best," said the diminutive sprinter, who clocked 10.78secs to win the 100 title at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

Fraser, who had struggled to break 11 seconds prior to last weekend, having removed her appendix in April and then sustaining a hamstring strain, says she is close to full fitness.

"I just needed to get out from the start because I haven't been starting good all season, and once I got into the rhythm I knew that I would run a good time," she said.

Much has been said about the expected clash between Jamaica's top sprinters and their American counterparts in Berlin after Carmelita Jeter and Muna Lee both posted 10.78 (+3.3 m/s) at the USA trials on Friday, but Fraser is not focusing on that.

"It's not only the Americans, there are so (many other) athletes on the circuit who are running really well. I don't think it's all about the Americans because if you're good on the day, you're going to win and that's what matters most," she said.

The second fastest Jamaican woman of alltime behind Merlene Ottey (10.74secs) is looking forward to some consistent form this summer.

"When I get to Europe on Monday, I don't know what is my coaching plan, but I'm just sticking with whatever he says and whatever happens I'll always do exactly what he says because he has stuck with me through thick and thin, and so will I," Fraser noted.
