Jamaican Dane Hyatt warmed up for this summer's 12th IAAF World Championships in Berlin by taking silver in the 400 metres on yesterday's first day of the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Havana, Cuba.

The Lincoln University stand-out, who placed fourth at Jamaica's trials last weekend, produced 45.57 seconds to place second in the one-lap event behind Cuban winner William Collazo, who stopped the clock at 44.96secs. Arismendy Peguaro of the Dominica Republic snatched the bronze with 45.62.

Hyatt's silver was one of five medals, which Jamaica secured on the eventful opening day of the regional games, less than 24 hours after arriving on Cuban soil.

Lerone Clarke, also of Lincoln University, had to settle for silver in the men's 100m despite clocking the identical time of 10.08secs as winner Emmanuel Callender of Trinidad and Tobago. Andrew Hinds of Barbados took the bronze with 10.12secs.

Callender and Hinds trains in Jamaica at the Racer's and MVP track clubs respectively.

Toni-Ann Doyley posted 13.13secs to take bronze in the 100-metre hurdle behind Cuba's Anay Tejeda 12.95 and Aleesha Barber of Trinidad and Tobago.

Kimberly Williams, the double gold medallist in the long and triple jump events at the 2009 NCAA Championships in the USA, had to settle for bronze in the triple jump with a best mark of 13.78 metres.

Defending world champion Savigne Yargelis of Cuba won the event with a leap of 14.97 ahead of her compatriot Mabel Gay 14.48m.

Elsewhere, national discus champion Jason Morgan, who had hoped to register the automatic 'A' qualifying mark of 64.50 metres for the Berlin World Championships in August, came up short.

His best effort of 57.47 metres placed him third in the discus behind the Cuban pair of Jorge Fernandez 61.79m and Yunio Lastre 59.80m.
