Henry advances to singles, mixed doubles quarter-finals of PanAm Junior Champs

AS the 18th Pan American Junior Badminton Championships continued in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Jamaica's Gareth Henry cruised into the quarter-final of the Boys' Under-19 Singles yesterday afternoon when he put away Brazilian Tiago Mantovani 21-8, 21-11 in 24 minutes during a third-round match.

Earlier yesterday morning, Henry defeated Mexican Arturo Hernandez 21-8, 22-20 in a 25-minute match.
At press time, Henry was set to play Sergiy Shatenko of Canada with the semi-finals to be played today.
So far, Henry has had a busy and successful tournament as he teamed with Mikaylia Haldane on Thursday in the U-19 Mixed Doubles to beat the seeded Canadian duo of Michael Diamond and Surahbi Kadam 18-21, 22-20, 22-20, also in third-round action.
Henry and Haldane were scheduled to play Peruvians Bruno Monteverde and Lorena Duany in the quarter-final last night.
In the Boys' Under-13 Singles, top-seed Sean Wilson of Jamaica earned a walkover from Puerto Rican Steven Velez.
And Sean paired with Guatemalan Esperanza Moreno to beat top seeds Nicholas Kenji and Amanda Kotsubo of Brazil 21-17, 21-13 for a place in the quarter-finals.
Sean's brother Shane Wilson, top seed in the Under-11 Boys Singles, polished off Barbadian Shae Martin 21-7, 21-8 in 13 minutes.
In the Under-15 Girls', Jade Clarke's run in the Singles ended Thursday after beating Puerto Rican Natalie Vega 21-15, 21-12, but losing to American Zandra Ho 5-21, 5-21 in 18 minutes.
Jade also lost with partner Samuel Ricketts in the Under-15 Mixed Doubles to Peruvians Gonzalo Duany and Camila Garcia, who won 21-8, 21-8 in 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, in the Under-15 Mixed Doubles, Jonathon David Smith and Jahvaine Henry have fought their way into the quarter-finals. They beat Puerto Ricans Cesar Rosa and Laura Diaz 21-9, 21-10 and Suriname third-seed Alrick Toney and Rugshaar Ishaak 17-21, 21-12, 21-13 in a match lasting 30 minutes.
Smith and Henry will face Canadians Nathan Osborne and Josephine Wu in the quarter-final of the Under-15 Mixed Doubles.
