Huge crowds seek Excelsior Domino honours

One hundred and 40 pairs turned up at YMCA and another 128 pairs came to Jacisera Park last Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to compete in the St Andrew leg of the Excelsior Domino Pairs Championship for the penultimate weekend ahead the grand finals on Sunday at the University of Technology.
Twenty-four pairs from YMCA and 32 pairs from Jacisera Park gained automatic entry into the grand finals. A total of 192 pairs from 14 playing days in the parishes finals across the island qualified to compete for the $500,000 on offer to the winner.
The top 16 pairs will receive cash prizes at the grand final.
YMCA saw the highest number of entries (140 pairs) at a single location since the start of the championship. The eventual winning pair, Marlon Dockery and Lincoln Watson, who defeated the pair of Dwayne Wilson and Roger Williams, 6-1, 6-1, took home $15,000 for topping the parish, while the runner-up pair of Wilson and Williams bagged $8,000.
Third and fourth places went to the pair of Clive Williams and Ezekiah Tyrell and Cedeia Foster and Clinton Cooper, who received $6,000 each.
On Sunday there was another bumper crowd at Jacisera Park with 128 pairs vying for the four cash prizes, dominoes and gift baskets from Excelsior as well as a place in the grand final.
The pair of Norval Anderson & Deon Murray started slowly in their best of three sets final, losing the first set 4-6 to Michael James and Kirkland McIntosh, but recovered to win in three sets after winning the final two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
They both play for Right Stuff Domino Club in Tower Hill and have been domino partners for the past 10 years. They walked away with $15,000, while the pair of James and McIntosh copped $8,000.
The pairs of Hector Hall and Clive Wilson and Richard Francis and Erick Plummer got $6,000 each for placing third and fourth overall.
The Excelsior Domino Pairs Championship features mental domino as no coding is tolerated by the organisers, the National Association of Domino Bodies which is an affiliate of the Federacion Internationale of Domino. The rules of play reflect that association's method.
