TG, P'More in goalless stalemate Harbour View end first round on high

Thursday, November 05, 2009

End-of-first-round finalists Tivoli Gardens FC drew 0-0 with Portmore United in yesterday's Digicel Premier League clash at Ferdie Neita Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, a brace from hometown boy Marcelino Blackburn ensured Harbour View ended the DPL first round on a high despite not making the round final by blanking Arnett Gardens 2-0 at the Tony Spaulding Complex.

Harbour View dominated the hosts for the most part and Blackburn netted in the 66th and 87th minutes to give the Donovan Hayles-coached side a deserved victory.

Tivoli finished top of the standings on 24 points, thanks to a better goal difference than St Georges SC, whom they meet in Sunday's matchup. Portmore end the round in fifth place on a disappointing 14 points.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first few minutes with coaches Linval Dixon of Portmore and Lenworth Hyde of Tivoli encouraging their players to keep possession.

However, Portmore could have gone ahead in the 22nd minute when Bryan Bayliss nodded just over the bar from a corner, with 'keeper Edsel Scott rooted to the ground.

Four minutes later, Tivoli's midfield engineer Keammar Daley struck tamely at Portmore's custodian Dwayne Kerr after being smartly set up by Roland Dean.

The second half was marginally more entertaining, but both teams were perhaps playing not to lose. Portmore's Kevin Morrissey got the first chance of the period when he held off his marker, but dragged his effort wide of the right upright in the 57th.

Three minutes later Tivoli created the most fluid move of the match when Dean linked up with Navion Boyd, but the latter's shot cannoned into the right upright and back into play.

Portmore's substitute Roen Nelson then turned his marker to hit one just beyond the top left-hand corner of Scott's goal. Tivoli again almost found the winner late in the game when the gangly Horace Sharpe miscued his right-footed effort from 10 yards out.
