CBA badminton tournament serves off

Two hundred and thirteen players have entered the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) Divisions B and D badminton tournament which begins tonight at 6:00 at 176 Old Hope Road.

Che Beckford and defending champion Carla Grant are the top seeds in the men's and ladies' B division singles, while Jon-Ross Newman and Crystal Smith lead the men's and ladies' singles seeds in the D division. Play will also take place in the doubles and mixed doubles.

Tastee Ltd and National Baking Company Ltd have sponsored the tournament, with the finals set for Monday.

Beckford opens his campaign on Saturday, playing the winner of the Samuel Ricketts v Lenroy Grant match, while Grant bows into action on Sunday against Hadei Kaye Williams in the B Division.

In the D Division, Newman begins his hunt against Jonathan Matthews tonight at 6:30, while on Sunday Smith will play the winner of the Emily Cheung v Jonnell James encounter set for 6:00 tonight.

The CBA tournament will continue next weekend in the Open and C Divisions. This is the 11th annual staging of the competition.
