ORGANISERS of the Wolmer's Ocean Spray Wata 5K Road Race and Relay are hoping for a doubling of participants for its second staging on Sunday, November 22 at National Heroes Circle.
Some 500 athletes took part in the inaugural event last year, but committee chairman Pat Riley said he believed some 1,000 athletes are expected from the 155 institutions invited.
The overall champion team will receive $15,000, while winners of the 5K Road Race will take home $12,000, with the second place getting $8,000 and third, $5,000.
For the relay, which is a new addition consisting of four 969-metre races, winners will get $5,000, second $3,000 and third $2,000, said Riley.
The competition will be divided into high school teams for boys and girls, and Open teams of males and females in the age groups of 12 and under, 13-14 years, 15-19 years, 20-35 years and over 35 years.
A fitness report card, complementary to all race participants will feature in the Wolmer's Ocean Spray 5K Road Race and Relay. It will measure height, weight, body fat, muscle, water and calories, noted Ocean Spray country manager Tamara Ward.
In handing over the sponsorship cheque of $600,000 to Wolmer's Boys Principal Dr Walton Small and committee chairman Riley, Ward said she hoped the fitness report card would become a feature of Jamaica's track and field programme.
Ward also noted that the first five teams with 50 or more representatives will receive products from the Wisynco Group Ltd company.
The 5K, to be run on 100 per cent asphalted roads with water stations at 2.2km and 4km stops, is an effort by Wolmer's to maintain their contribution to the development of local track and field and replaces the John Wolmer meet which was active in the 1980s and 1990s.
Puma, Singer, Scotia DBG Investments, Cari-Med Ltd - through its product Ensure - and the MVP Track Club have also supported the November 22 meet as gold, relay, and associate sponsors.
Singer's product manager Melanie Pierce and Cari-Med senior product manager Allison Dexter also handed over their cheques at Wednesday's press conference held at Wolmer's Boys' School.
