Sachin's slams masterly 175, but India lose

Friday, November 06, 2009

HYDERABAD, India (AP) - Australia held on for a three-run victory over India in the fifth One-Day International yesterday despite 175 from Sachin Tendulkar.

India seemed to be heading toward the second-highest run-chase in the history of One-Day Internationals, but Tendulkar's dismissal, off his 141st delivery, prompted a collapse that ultimately left them marginally short of victory. India are now 3-2 behind in the seven-match series.

"It was an amazing game, and certainly one of the best innings ever from Sachin," said Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

"We knew just one bad shot and we'd be on top, but Sachin didn't play many bad shots today."

Earlier, an outstanding 145-run opening partnership between Shaun Marsh (112) and Shane Watson (93) boosted Australia to an imposing total of 350-4 in 50 overs.

Tendulkar's 45th One-Day century led India's India chase, but Watson returned to snare 3-47 and rookie pacer Clint McKay claimed 3-59. The hosts were all out for 347 with two balls to spare.

The 36-year-old Tendulkar became the first player to score 17,000 runs in One-Day Internationals when he reached seven. Hitting four sixes and nine boundaries, he and Suresh Raina put on a brisk 137-run stand for the fifth wicket.

After Tendulkar's departure, the Australian players kept their nerves and claimed the last three wickets for 15 runs. Praveen Kumar's run out in the final over sparked on-field celebrations for the injury-hit Australian team, which has seen five players return home due to injury midway the tour.

Tendulkar said it was disappointing to lose after Raina had helped him resurrect the Indian innings from the top-order slump.
