TG want to do it for slain Simpson

Sunday, November 08, 2009

Tivoli Gardens FC manager Brian Rose has assured the Sunday Observer that his team is psychologically ready to tackle St Georges SC in today's first end-of-round final of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) at the National Stadium.

SIMPSON... stabbed to death in Tivoli Gardens a few weeks ago

As defending champions, Tivoli Gardens are accustomed to being in the final. However, this one carries special sentiments as it is potentially their first major achievement since the stabbing death of influential national representative Oraine Simpson.

Rose contends that the importance of the occasion has not been lost on the players, despite a few of them being tired.

"The players are a bit fatigued but they are looking forward to... win in honour of Oraine. Each team looks to win trophies and we have reached the final of one... and I think my players are up for it," he said.

Rose added that die-hard Tivoli supporters have also been encouraging their team to achieve big things this season. "They are behind the team and they would also like to win in memory of Oraine. In training and at matches we've been getting good feedback," Rose stated.

Meanwhile, team coach Lenworth Hyde says his players are primed for success against their Portland-based opponents.

"We're really confident. We just want to top it off with a good result for Tivoli," said Hyde, while advising the Sunday Observer that he is satisfied with what his team has done so far this season. "It has meant a lot to the players. It's always good when you set goals and targets and you can reach them..."

Tivoli have won two games and drawn two, including a 1-0 victory over St Georges at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex since the tragic incident.

Simpson will be buried next Sunday, and what better way to celebrate the life of a wonderful football talent than to win later today?

Despite his confidence, Hyde insists he is aware of the quality that St Georges possess.

"Our team is an attacking team, so we hope we can come good in defence. We've been working on that area of our game. They (St Georges) have an excellent defensive unit marshalled by Jermaine Taylor," Hyde said.
