The inaugural staging of the 2018 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Challenge Cup Netball Championship got underway last week with 12 high school teams competing for the title.

Six schools from the urban area are contesting Zone A at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston, while the same number from rural area are squaring off in Zone B at Manchester High School courts. The matches are being played on a round-robin basis with the top two teams from each zone advancing to the semi-finals.

Last Friday in Zone A contest, Gaynstead High defeated Camperdown High 39-15; St Catherine High got the better of The Queen's School 34-27; and Norman Manley High registered a convincing 38-17 win over St Hugh's High.

On Thursday in Zone B, Manchester High crushed Bishop Gibson High 41-11 and May Day High whipped Knox College 41-6.

The Zone A teams are Gaynstead, St Catherine, The Queen's, Camperdown, Norman Manley and St Hugh's, while contesting Zone B are Manchester, May Day, Mile Gully, Bellefield, Bishop Gibson, and Knox College.

INSPORTS Sports Officer Sylvester “Chris” Campbell, who is the coordinator of the compettiton, said it is a pre-season preparation build-up for the girls leading into the ISSA Urban and Rural Area High Schoolgirls Netball Leagues.

“The coaches can assess each player and also the team and see what he or she needs to adjust or improve on prior to the start of the ISSA Urban and Rural Area High schoolgirl netball leagues, scheduled to begin in September,” Campbell said.

Campbell also said that the INSPORTS Challenge Cup should give players the opportunity to prepare themselves and also to get match-fit and ready for their respective competitions.

The top three schools in the championship will receive trophies and medals, along with gift vouchers to purchase sport gears from a sports goods store, while balls will be handed out to all the participating teams.

The INSPORTS Cup will be presented to the winner of the championship, while there will be a special award for the most outstanding player.
