Four-year-old roan filly My Sister, in a well-timed run, came off the pace to collar 1-5 favourite Mr Universe late and win the $1-million Vassell “Jolly Man” Najair Memorial Trophy feature by 1 lengths, at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Bred and owned by Michael Bernard, trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by Dane Dawkins, My Sister ( TaqarubLady MacBeth) ran the non-restricted Overnight Allowance event over six furlongs (1,200m) in a career-best time of 1:11.4, after splits 22.2 x 45.5.

It was an even break for most of the runners in the 16-horse field, but after a couple of strides Polly B (Abigail Able) shot to the front from the number 13 post and held a length lead over Mr Universe and Omar Walker, going into the first turn.

At the three-eighths pole Mr Universe took over and seemed all set for a comfortable win approaching the distance, as he was well clear at the top of the lane. But Dawkins, who had carried My Sister five-wide into the turn, got the filly to run inside the final half furlong (100m) and My Sister got up in time for the win.

Mr Universe was 1 lengths in front of Lady Blue (Javaniel Patterson), who came through for third place in the three-year-old and upwards event.

It was the second winner on the 12-race programme for Dawkins, as he earlier won aboard Lady V in the first race for trainer Gresford Smith.

Also with two winners were trainer Wayne DaCosta and jockeys Omar Walker and Shane Ellis, and apprentices Raddesh Roman and Roger Hewitt.

The DaCosta-saddled American Invader (Raddesh Roman) in the fifth race and Rojorn di Pilot (Omar Walker) in the eight race. Roman won the 12th and final race atop El Gringo for trainer Donovan Russell for his double, while Walker had earlier won with Uncle Wal in the third race for trainer Johnny Wilmot.

Ellis' two winners were Prince Dominick in the fourth race for trainer Junior Small, and Dezzy The Genius in the seventh race for trainer Rowan Mathie. Hewitt was successful with Big Black Nation in the sixth race for trainer Raymond Townsend and Awesome Glitter in the ninth race for trainer Michael Beecham.

Racing continues next Saturday.
