NEW Scheme beat Building Two 6-4 to capture the 2017 Sports Development Foundation (SDF)-sponsored Southern Conference Summer Mini Basketball Tournament played at the Majesty Gardens court last Friday.

It was the second staging of the basketball summer camp where six teams from the community were involved in three weeks of training and competition, which had approximately 75 Under-12 youth participating.

Terrence Ffrench of New Scheme was the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament.

In the first semi-final, New Scheme defeated Down 'D' Road 8-2 to advance to the final, while in the other semi-final Building Two scored a massive upset over the previously unbeaten Board House 16-1 to book their place in the final.

Meanwhile, in the battle between Majesty Young Legend and defending champions Rae Town Warriors in the Under-13 tournament, the former won 11-4 after the game had to be cut short to one quarter as there was no light.

Majesty Young Legends managed to pull away from Rae Town Warriors after they were locked at 4-4 in the early exchanges.

Ffrench, who had earlier won the MVP in the Mini Tournament final, was again named MVP for the Under-13 final.

Calvin Martin from the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), who conducted the seminar, said: “The summer camp was very successful as it teaches the youth to respect their opponents and also to be a good sport.”

Martin said the summer camp began in July and was also used primarily to develop the youngsters of the surrounding areas to be more disciplined.

“The programme will continue when the school system has settled down,” Martin said.

The Southern Conference Summer Mini Basketball programme was supported by the Community Basketball League, while Digicel Jamaica provided school bags for the participants.
