FOUR-year-old bay colt Patriarch, who is making his seasonal debut, should be fit enough to hold rivals at bay in the $1 million Easter Sprint Cup feature at Caymanas Park today.

Not raced since finishing in last position behind Another Vigorous, Another Bullet and Hilly's Halo in the Gladiator Trophy over seven furlongs (1,400m) on December 29 of last year, Patriarch has been burning up the exercise track in the mornings, suggesting that the Casual Trick offspring is in fine form and ready to do battle once more.

Lottery Ticket and Hilly's Halo should be his main dangers in the 13-horse field, but good runs are expected from Zephyr, My Sister and Wilson as well.

The Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m) is positioned as the 10th and final event on the card with a post time of 5:30 pm. First race is at 12:10 pm.

Patriarch has been competing in the class above without much luck and now stepping down in class, he should be more than comfortable given the nature of this race. The last time Patriarch raced in Overnight Allowance company was on October 20, 2018 in the Ahwhofah Sprint over six furlongs (1,200m) and was a three-and-a-half lengths winner in a blistering time of 1:11.4 minutes.

The only horse in the line-up to go faster than 1:11.4 for six furlongs is Hilly's Halo, who had done 1:10.4 on June 30, 2018, but this race is half-furlong (100m) shorter and Patriarch could last home.

Despite carrying top weight of 57.0kgs (126 lb), Patriarch might be too fast for rivals to be caught in the end.

Hilly's Halo could prove to be Patriarch's main danger. The American-bred chestnut filly came off a four-month break on April 6 of this year and was beaten into third place by KD Flyer and Lottery Ticket over the five furlong (1,000m) straight course.

That could just be the pipe-opener she needed. Hilly's Halo is more than comfortable at the Overnight Allowance level and if Patriarch should miss a step here, look for Hilly's Halo to bring home this trophy.

Not best suited for the five-straight course Lottery Ticket came running on in the final stages of the race to finish in second place, beaten by a length by KD Flyer.

Now venturing on the round course, one-half furlong longer, Lottery Ticket could once again get into the thick of things and could get up in time. Only one issue concerning the chances of Lottery Ticket here is the fact that she will be coming from the number one post position.
