ST CATHERINE Saints carved out a 1-0 win over defending champions KSAFA All-Stars as the 2018 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/SportsMax Elite League got underway at Spanish Town Prison Oval on Saturday.

Midfielder Kimani Gibbons scored the lone goal of the match in the 21st minute to give his team victory in the East Zone encounter.

Winning coach Jermaine Thomas of St Catherine said the team played well in patches and should have won by more goals, as they got quite a number of chances to win handsomely.

“The players, however, need to improve on various positions before our next game and should be looking for a much better overall performance,” he said.

Meanwhile, KSAFA All-Stars coach Orlando Clarke said his team exhibited some measure of inexperience.

“We got a few chances inside the penalty box from close range to gain the equaliser, especially in the second half, and squandered them. St Catherine played well and they played as if they wanted to win it most,” Clarke noted.

In the first half, St Catherine Saints looked more purposeful and more positive in their attacking approach as they kept the opposing defenders and goalkeeper busy.

Leading the attacks for the Saints were Shawn Thompson, Saglain Waul, Ryan Brown and Mario Salesman.

The KSAFA All-Stars team, led by Norman Campbell, Earon Elliott, Maliek Howell and Jamar Morrison, regularly gave away possession of the ball cheaply.

Keeping the KSAFA outfit on the back foot, Saints got their chance when Gibbons picked up a loose ball in midfield and slipped the ball between the defence before beating the goalkeeper.

In another East Zone match at Drax Hall, St Thomas Cobras tagged Portland Blazers 3-0 through goals from Damorney Hutchinson (31st minute), Ronaldo Bailey (34th), and Alinton Frankson (63rd).

St Ann Giants and St Mary Raiders played to a 0-0 draw at the same venue.

In a West Zone double -header at Elletson Wakeland Centre, Hanover Warriors clipped St Elizabeth Tigers 1-0 through a 36th-minute goal from Tyrique Clarke.

In the other match Manchester Lions defeated Trelawny Barons 4-1 at Elletson Wakeland Centre with goals from Marlando Maxwell in the 13th minute, Brandon Brown (16th), Ajay Chin (18th) and Tahja Reynolds (65th). Trelawny benefited from an own goal in the 72nd minute.

Also, Clarendon Galaxy, through goals from Lamar Walker (40th minute) and Anthony Latchman (80th) beat Westmoreland Warriors 2-1 at Juici Park in Clarendon. Javed Richardson scored for the losers in the 16th minute.
