St Catherine blank Denham Town in Group D

Wednesday, October 04, 2017

A steadily improving St Catherine High continued their good run of form to maintain second place in Group D of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup with a 2-0 win against hapless Denham Town at Tivoli Gardens High School field yesterday.

Javaughn Cole netted both goals in the second half — the first in 49th minute and the second from the penalty spot in the 79th minute. The strikes brought Cole's tally of goals for the season to seven.

Bryan Spencer, assistant coach of St Catherine, was more than pleased with the win.

“Our plan coming into the game was basic. We wanted to take all three points. We achieved the objective and moved to 16 points. We defeated them 3-0 in the first game and it would have been nice to score more goals on this occasion, but two goals are not bad for an away game. What this victory will do for us is to put us firmly second in Group D,” he said.

The defeat could signal the death knell for Denham Town High as they are in a desperate situation with only three games to go.

Their Assistant Coach Kimathi-Nkrumah MaKonnen observed: “The defeat has left us fighting for survival in the group, which means that we will have to pull out all the stops to win our next three games to give ourselves a slim chance to advance as one of the best third-place finishers.”
