St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) confirmed their spot in the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup competition with a 1-0 win over Mona High in a Group B clash at their Spanish Town Road base yesterday.

The all-important strike came in the 55th minute when a well-taken corner kick by substitute Shamir Gibbs resulted in an own goal by custodian Jean Luke Wilmot.

The win kept the Philip Williams-coached team in pole position on 21 points, as they have all but secured the group's top spot. Their lone remaining first-round game is against lowly Donald Quarrie.

Champions Jamaica College kept up the chase in second on 19 points. Their final game is against Papine High, while former champions Bridgeport High remain in third on 16 points. Bridgeport got by Papine High 2-1 in their fixture at Cedar Grove Estate Multi-purpose Complex.

At Bumper Hall, STATHS dominated a goalless first half and came out even more spirited upon the resumption, following the introduction of Gibbs immediately after the break.

The lanky player, sporting the number seven jersey, injected some amount of tempo into his team's attacking thrust and caused a few problems for Mona's defensive line.

With the consistent pressure applied by STATHS, it was only a matter of time before they found the go-ahead goal, and it inevitably came five minutes from the hour-mark.

Gibbs executed an expertly taken corner kick which curled dangerously at the last minute and proved too hot to handle for the hapless Wilmot at his near post.

Gibbs connected with another substitute Jevoney Johnson shortly after in a dangerous build-up, but the latter steered his right-footed effort just wide of the left upright.

Mona were further pinned down in their quarter as STATHS continued their hunt to increase the tally and they again came close through Andre Smith, whose 20-yard free kick came back off the cross bar and into the path of Barrington Bailey. Despite having two bites at the cherry, Bailey failed to beat the gloves of Wilmot.

And with the final effort of the game, another substitute Racquille Dunkley held his head in despair after his effort from Johnson's well-weighted cross was just pushed over the cross bar by Wilmot in time added.
