Chestnut filly Lady Blue and chestnut gelding Toona Ciliata established themselves as top contenders for the upcoming Classics after producing good performances to win their respective Guineas Trials at Caymanas Park, yesterday.

Lady Blue, trained by Wayne DaCosta, made all the running to win the Thornbird Stakes by two lengths, while Toona Ciliata, trained by Anthony Nunes, rallied in deep stretch to take the Prince Consort Stakes by 1 lengths. Both races were contested over seven furlongs (1,400m).

With Omar Walker in the saddle, Lady Blue got her usual good break and held a slim lead over Princess Lauren (Dane Dawkins), Corazon (Robert Halledeen) and Casual Drink (Dane Nelson).

The order remained the same in the backstretch until Lady Blue increased the tempo navigating the half mile (800m) turn, with the chasing pack following.

Coming into the lane, Lady Blue hit top gear and went away off from rivals, and although she was hortening a bit Lady Blue did enough to win.

Princess Ava (Reyan Lewis), who was outpaced for the majority of the race, came with a strong run in deep stretch for second, with Princess Lauren third.

Bred by Blue Pepsi Lodge - The Vibes Lady, the Carlton Watson-owned and-bred Lady Blue ran the distance in 1:26.0.

Lady Blue was one of three winners on the day for Walker, who also won aboard Papa Albert in the second race for trainer Welsh Soutar, and Ras Emanuel in the 10th for trainer Peter McMaster.

Toona Ciliata got a good break from the number one draw and was put in front by Shane Ellis of Father Patrick (Omar Walker), with Earn Your Stripes (Robert Halledeen) in third slot.

The pace was increased at the half mile when Father Patrick took the lead over Toona Ciliata with Earn Your Stripes behind.

Father Patrick turned for home in the lead in mid-stretch and when all seemed lost for Toona Ciliata on the inside rails, Ellis produced his mount and Toona Ciliata found extra and rallied to win.

Father Patrick held for second place and Earn Your Stripes — who was giving Halledeen a difficult time in deep stretch — was third.

Owned by Stephan Narinesingh, Wilbert Bagwandeen and AJA, Toona Ciliata ( Soul WarriorRed Gold) came home in 1:25.4.
