Three teams chase Manning Cup progress

Thursday, October 05, 2017

St George's College, Holy Trinity High and Camperdown High could all book spots in the second round of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup today.

Many-time champions St George's, who lead Group D with maximum 21 points, host second-placed St Catherine High (16 points) knowing very well the importance of a victory.

St Catherine, sitting five points behind with three games remaining, must beat the 'Light Blues' to have any chance of topping the group.

But St Catherine must also be wary of third-placed Kingston Technical (12 points) as they tackle lowly Denham Town (six points). Tarrant High will host Vauxhall High.

St George's edged St Catherine 1-0 on September 19 in a close encounter and another keen tussle should be in store at Winchester Park.

In Group C, Camperdown High (18 points) host second-placed Hydel High (15 points) in a crucial encounter between teams vying for group honours, and a spot in the cash-rich FLOW Super Cup. However, Hydel who defeated Camperdown 5-2 in the first round, have two games in hand.

Waterford, on 12 points in third spot, will be watching the top-of-the-table clash closely as they take on the pointless St Mary's College.

Last season's third-placed team Holy Trinity High lead Group F with 19 points and they play second-placed Clan Carthy High on 12 points in another group-defining encounter. A win for Holy Trinity will seal their spot in the next round, and even if they lose, the Devon Anderson-coached boys will have two more games to get it right.
