TAROUBA, Trinidad (CMC) — Windward Islands Volcanoes finally broke their winless streak when they brushed aside United States by 43 runs in an uninspiring Group B fixture of the Regional Super50 Cup here Wednesday.

Without a victory in two previous outings in the tournament, Volcanoes kick-started their campaign when they got up to 225 for nine off their 50 overs and then dismissed United States for 182 in the 46th over.

At the centre of their success was leg-spinning all-rounder Keron Cottoy, who top-scored with a run-a-ball unbeaten 43 and then returned to take five for 37, in an outstanding performance.

While the victory handed Volcanoes their first points, United States remained at the bottom of the standings without a point in three outings.

Choosing to bat first at Brian Lara Stadium, Volcanoes found themselves 17 for three in the sixth over after seamer Jasdeep Singh (2-24) struck twice in successive overs to set the innings back.

Three key partnerships then engineered a Volcanoes recovery and put them on course for a competitive total. Kavem Hodge and Desron Maloney, both with 42, put on 55 for the fourth wicket to steady the innings before Hodge paired with Alick Athanaze (25) to add a further 40 for the fifth wicket.

Hodge's dismissal, gloving a pull at seamer Cameron Stevenson (2-43) to wicketkeeper Monank Patel in the 30th over, saw three wickets tumble 16 runs in the space of 19 balls.

Cottoy, who featured last season for reigning champions CCC Marooners, then came to his side's aid, striking four fours and a six off 43 deliveries, as he staged a 47-run, eighth-wicket partnership with Shane Shillingford, whose 31 included three sixes in a 45-ball stay at the crease.
