Dear Orchid Doc:

I do not have much outdoor space so I would like to grow my orchids indoors. I am told, however, that very few plants survive indoors. Your advice would be much appreciated.

Truth be told, few people accomplish this feat unless there's a sunroof building and lots of air circulating. My suggestion is that you carefully research the growth requirements of a few plants and see how best you can replicate that environment.

Dear Orchid Doc:

I recently bought two Sun Vandas, took them home to Portmore and exposed them to sun. I was told that they could take the sun. Unfortunately they got burnt, and badly! I admit to being a novice. This is my first attempt with orchids and you can, I am certain, imagine my disappointment. Help!

Patrice

Dear Patrice:

I am so sorry about your orchids. Usually, I tell my readers that when buying a Sun Vanda it is always wise to notice the difference between the sunlight from the area it is leaving vis--vis the new environment.

So test the areas first, or try to position the leaves in the direction of the rising sun. Do not put the flat area towards it.

In the meantime, use a fertiliser that is high in nitrogen and ensure about 50 per cent shade until your orchids recover.
