Devon House shares anniversary gifts with TEENage readers

TEENnews

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

IN celebration of Devon House's 130 years, its Development Company and Jamaica Observer asked the readers to re-engage in our history.

As a museum, the heritage site is toured primarily by students islandwide, and we thought the best way to celebrate the rich cultural history of the site was to provide complimentary tours for students, the cost of which is underwritten by sponsors.

Last Friday, almost 30 winners received some gifts right in time for the Christmas season at the Devonshire at the mansion.

The competition was open to students in three categories: Primary/Prep; Secondary/High; and Tertiary/Vocational.

Entrants were asked to answer correctly a trivia question and complete an entry form as it appeared in the newspapers.

The first three winners selected (based on correctly completed entries) were adjudged county winners and received the top prizes available — 'Sweet Escapes' tour experiences for 130 persons at each of their respective schools.

Those winners are:

County winners

Cornwall: Kristoff Young, Grange Hill Primary

Middlesex: Clevon Reid, Jamaica Bible College

Surrey: Vanessa McBean, Immaculate Conception High School

The next nine correct entries, spanning all three categories, were then adjudged and received prizes including 'Sweet Escapes' tour experiences for up to 50 persons at their respective schools.

Those winners are:

Primary

1st: Asheka Kenlyn, Unity Primary in Westmoreland

2nd: Shanoy Manning, Mt Alvernia Prep in Hanover

3rd: Racquel Evans, Red Bank All-Age in St Elizabeth

Secondary

1st: Tashie Parris, St Ann's Bay Primary in St Ann

2nd: Donna McIntyre, Montego Bay High in St James

The next 18 correct entries drawn were adjudged sectional winners and received prizes.

And the winners:

From Surrey: Shanice Derby from Jessie Ripoll Primary; Caymar Williams from Papine High School; Nicholas Newman from Jamaica College; Deshanel Hanson from St Aloysius Primary; Jade Jeffery from Campion College; Chelsey Williams from St Theresa's Prep; Tashianna Willoughby from Excelsior High School; and Sicourney Jackson from The Queen's School.

Andre Reid, marketing and events manager at Devon House Development Company said: "Via the TEENage and Daily Observer newspapers, we surpassed our desired reach of a minimum of 2,500 students islandwide, supported by our social media platforms. The desired results were surpassed as our aim was 500 free tours and we were able to give away 600."

"We are very proud to be a part of the celebartion of one of Jamaica's heritage sites," said Pamille Shaw-Blair, assistant marketing and communications manager at Jamaica Observer.

"As a company," she continued, "we are always looking for ways to foster nation-building. We are heartened that our readers were so moved that they partipated in record numbers."

Devon House wants to invite all to visit and 'like' their Facebook page and ' follow' them on Twitter (they are hoping to have 1,000 likes by January 1).

Other patners were: Fidelity Motors, Jamaica Beverages/Busta, MegaMart, Royale Computers, Tru-Juice/Freshhh, WATA, Mercedes Benz, Innovative Corporate Solutions, Jamaica International Insurance Company, National Commercial Bank and Social Media Jamaica.
