Digicel urges young smartphone videographers to film and win
Digicel is challenging students from ages 15 to 18 to submit a winning entry in the 10th Annual World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Video Competition for a chance to win trip to Puerto Rico, tablets and cash prizes.
Using a smartphone or video camera, each participant must create a three (3) minute video under the theme: “Inspiring ICT Innovations: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem through Sustainable Strategic Partnerships”.
Students are encouraged to use their creativity to demonstrate how Information and Communications Technology (ICT) inspires innovative ideas, products and services; and fosters entrepreneurship by utilizing and encouraging partnerships in their country.
Digicel Head of Public Relations, Elon Parkinson, encouraged interested persons to, “Get creative. Stretch the boundaries of your imagination. Be bold. Be different. But, most of all, do your research and come up with a video that could go viral!”
The top three (3) videos (in order of points) will be selected and awarded the following prizes:
• 1st Place:
o Trip for 2 to attend CANTO 2016 in Puerto Rico
o Hotel accommodation – (double occupancy)
o A Tablet plus US$1000.00
• 2nd Place: Tablet, plus US$500.00
• 3rd Place: Smartphone, plus US$250.00
Parkinson noted, “We are happy to share this exciting learning and earning opportunity for students to showcase their talent and understanding of how technology is reshaping the way we do things. It is also an important learning exercise for students with an ambition to take up jobs in the field of ICT.”
The competition is being promoted locally by Digicel, a member of the regional telecommunications lobby group, CANTO, responsible for leading regional activities to commemorate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.
The competition will be staged throughout the region among active member countries of CANTO. Entries received on or before May 1, 2016 will be forwarded to a panel of experts in the field of telecommunications and education, to be judged on creativity, originality, message content and technical organization. All finalists will be given an opportunity to gain up to ten percent (10%) of their final score from social media votes (Facebook).
Winning videos will be posted on CANTO’s website by Tuesday May 17, 2016. Students are encouraged to visit https://canto.org/competitions/wtisd-video-competition/ for more information.
