1 The Jamaican Government posthumously awarded Mary Seacole with the country's third highest honour, the Order of Merit.

2 Merlene Ottey won gold in both the 100m and 200m at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland. These were Jamaica's only gold medals out of their four, the other two were bronze.

3 Miss Jamaica 1990 Erica Aquart became the first Miss World Caribbean Queen of Beauty after placing in the top six finalists at the global pageant.

4 This year marked the very first staging of Jamaica Carnival by Byron Lee & Friends, which featured a week of activities from April 14-22. This event would evolve into the massive festivities we see today.

5 Jamaica's then Governor General, Sir Florizel Augustus Glasspole, retired from office to be later replaced by Sir Howard Cooke.

6 Jamaican-American singer Sean Kingston was born on February 3.

7 Mike McCallum, Jamaica's most-renowned boxer was awarded Jamaica's Sportsman of the Year for the seventh time.

8 The Jamaica Tourist Board first launched their 'One Love' campaign. This eventually became and still remains its signature campaign theme.

9 Devon House was declared a national monument by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.

10 The movie for the novel Lord Of The Flies, which won author William Golding the Nobel Prize was shot almost entirely in Jamaica.
