Jessiker Bakes, a TEEN’s sweet dream

IT is often said that necessity is the mother of invention and such a statement bears profound meaning to 19-year-old Jessica Hylton, owner of the recently launched business — Jessiker Bakes.

Hylton, a second year Law student at the University of the West Indies, decided in the summer of 2010 that instead of being daunted by the prospect of not having a summer job, she would embark on a venture for which she had a natural passion. The business would also help her to achieve some level of financial independence. It was this conviction that gave birth to the company that offers a wide array of delectable baked goods, sweets and treats.

Founded in April 2010, Jessiker Bakes showed prospect of being a formidable force in Jamaica's culinary sphere in just a few short months. The business operates from Hylton's home in St Andrew and has catered for birthdays, parties, office events, baby showers and wedding showers, among other events. Jessiker Bakes also caters to the average pastry lover, who just wants to satisfy his/her sweet tooth.

Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, breads, cheesecakes, pies, tarts and seasonal treats are among Hylton's specialties. When asked what her secret is, Hylton replies, "I love this job... I don't think I'll ever be able to explain to anyone how much I love baking... when you find something that you love and pursue it, your work becomes like leisure."

The company was officially launched on January 23, 2011 and TEENage was invited to the intimate gathering to indulge in the array of pastries and treats produced by Jessiker Bakes. Judging by how quickly the products disappeared, it would be fair to say that they were unanimously enjoyed.

With its own blog and website: www.jessikerbakes.com, Jessiker Bakes placed in the top five in the categories of Best Food Blog and Best Company Blog at the inaugural Jamaica Blog Awards earlier this year.

With such bold conviction and unquestionable talent, TEENage has a feeling that we will be hearing a lot more from this TEEN entrepreneur in the years to come. Remember to check out her special Valentine's Day treats which are now available.
