Miss Manchester claims TVJ Festival Queen crown

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

THIRTEEN ladies vied for the crown at the 2010 Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition two Saturdays ago at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, but only one captured it. She is Miss Manchester, Johnnel Smith, who won for herself $500,000 courtesy of the Chase Fund, as well as another $500,000 in prizes from different sponsors for the event.

Twenty-two-year-old Johnnel Smith, a superwoman in her own right, was crowned favourite after winning some special awards such as the Most Culturally Aware award, for which she won $25,000 and a trophy from Spring Time, and Most Active in the Community, for which she won another $25,000 and a trophy from the National Commercial Bank (NCB).

When asked by TEENage how she felt about winning, she responded, "I am happy! I feel so excited and ecstatic. I mean, no one could predict the outcome of this competition because all the girls are so beautiful and brilliant." She also told TEENage that she hopes to start her project, entitled 360 Degrees, which caters to TEENage boys from 13 to 18 years, by helping them become better men of society.

Another crowd favourite was Miss Kingston and St Andrew, Tyesha Turner, who came in second. In addition to this, she also won the Most Poised award and the Best Designer award. For this she received $150,000 from Claro as well as other prizes from Capital and Credit Limited, JCDC, and Singer.

She told TEENage, when asked how she felt with her placement, that she was proud of her accomplishment in the competition. She also added that her experience being in the competition was superb and that she would encourage any female to enter.

Third-place went to Miss Trelawny, Chloe Frowers, who received $100,000 courtesy of COK Credit Union as well as other prizes from JCDC and Capital and Credit Limited. Other girls rounding out the top five are Miss St Catherine, Kenisha Allen, who also won the Most Poised award, and Angelita McDonald from Hanover who also got the best performance award.

All top five contestants each received a gift basket from Stayfree. Miss Hanover received a cash award of $25,000 and a trophy from COK Co-operative Credit Union and Miss St Catherine received a cash award of $25,000 and a trophy from General Accident.

This year's coronation show was a big production. And the opening act was a testament to that, with an opening celebration done by the Spanish Town Dance Theatre Company and the Wolmer's Dance Troupe under the theme Buccaneers and Pirates.

TEENage also enjoyed the parading of the contestants in their national costumes which came later, and was then followed by appearing in their evening wear.

As the night proceeded, patrons were treated to performances from different guest acts, which included the Strachan Sisters, the Fab 5 Band, Cameal Davis, and Aisha Davis.

Another highlight of the night was the presentation of a new award, which was given to Miss St Thomas, Tasha-Gae Wilson. This award is for the performer whose talent best portrays Jamaican heritage. This award came with a $10,000 dollar cash prize from JCDC. Amekia Ramsay from Miss Portland also walked away with the Most Popular award. She went home with a cash award of $25,000 and a trophy courtesy of Claro. Also, all 13 contestants received a plaque from Television Jamaica, and gift packages from Springtime and L'Oreal.
