The more you know about cold sores...

Cold sores usually show up as tender 'pimples' commonly appearing on the lips, but may also occur on your nostrils, chin or fingers. They are caused by a type of herpes virus 'HSV-1', which is not only transmitted sexually. The virus that causes cold sores can also be transmitted through mucus in the nose and saliva. Once you get this virus it stays in your body, which means cold sores may appear from time to time throughout your life.

Ways to prevent them from appearing and/or reappearing:

* Avoid sharing things like lip gloss, toothbrushes, utensils and drinks.

* Avoid kissing and skin contact when a cold sore appears.

* Avoid too much sun light, use sun block.

* Avoid stress as this may cause cold sores to flare up.

* Practice washing your hands often, eating well, exercising and getting lots of sleep.

Cold sores generally clear up without treatment over a period of seven to 10 days. In the meantime, the following steps may provide relief.

* Take acetaminophen Tylenol, Ibuprofen or Advil, etc, if the cold sores are painful.

* Suck on ice cubes to ease the pain and keep sores cool.

* Stay away from acidic foods like oranges, tomatoes, lemonade, saltly and spicy foods. They may cause irritation.

* Don't pick cold sores, they may bleed or become infected with bacteria.

If they appear frequently, have your parents take you to a dermatologist, who may be able to prescribe medication to alleviate symptoms and shorten the amount of time cold sores last.
