What happens when a chance meeting of an Australian wine maker and a Jamaican model turned geologist happens in a European airport? Bakenal wines is perhaps one of the results.

EVOI Wines founder and winemaker Nigel Ludlow began making a few barrels of Chardonnay in a backyard garage that were then fermented in a living room under an air-conditioner. Several years later the high scores and the awards and international recognition started to roll in. EVOI Wines, located in Margaret River, Western Australia, was named “Western Australian Winery of the Year” at the 2015 Melbourne International Wine Show.

One-man band

Hailed as one of Australia's best independent winemakers, Ludlow actually does it all. He makes the wine, does the administration and then sells the wine. He has been a one-man band from the very beginning until recently when he had to hire someone to help him in the vineyard. Another recent addition to his team is his Jamaican fiancée Alexcia Gray, who will manage exports for EVOI Wines. While they prepare for their nuptials, the couple has been busy meeting with potential importers/distributors to establish local representation.

What's in a name?

Bacchus was the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness and ecstasy in Roman mythology. Bacchus was able to induce a frenzy known as “bakcheia” which was said to free participants from their normal limited selves through ecstatic indulgence - bacchanal! “Evoi” is the scream of joy from the female followers of Bacchus.

While Evoi Wines has a range of award-winning wines in its portfolio, the newest project is inspired by the modern-day Caribbean Carnival, and is celebrated in honour of Bacchus the ancient god of food, drink and merriment. These wines are Bakenal White Wine — a fresh fruit-forward white wine blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc; Bakenal Black Rosé; and Bakenal Red Wine — a fresh, smooth merlot-based red wine.

Nigel Ludlow and Alexcia Gray recently hosted a tasting of their range of wines at The Wine Shop in Southdale Plaza, which will have the wines on their list.
