“I'm still so excited... me hearing my name called, then carefully walking on the red carpet and on the stage in front of so many people. Collecting my award and then being congratulated by so many on the way back to my seat,” gushed Jacqueline Thompson, when Thursday Food caught up with her on Monday morning, as she readied her bar for another week. She's not found the perfect spot to display her award but the evening's activities, in addition to her being highlighted in Sunday's Style Observer , are still uppermost in her mind. “Mr (Gordon “Butch”) Stewart himself congratulated me, she continued. He said 'Congratulations! Well done!' Can you imagine, Mr Stewart spoke to me! I am still overwhelmed...”

Thompson's only disappointment is that her mum Joyce Hill was unavoidably absent. “She's been in the business for 29 years and knows how to keep a good bar going,” Thompson noted. When asked to share with us her mum's recipe for success, she had this to say: “You've got to be serious about the business and know how to keep your customers happy. My mum is stern and knows how to handle her money. And of course the bar must be well-stocked with Red Stripe!”

Our conversation came to an end as Thompson, now surrounded by scores of well-wishers, recounted her red-carpet moment once more... It's a story, we reckon, she'll be sharing for years to come.
