'Eight platings, fine wine, great ambience' is how the organisers of the Jamaica Food & Drink Festival presented the concept of Sneak Taste, a prix fixe menu, offering culinary snapshots of what is to come on the themed nights of the festival's imminent second staging. A circle of restaurant chefs and event caterers, putting forward gourmet creations for a succinct guest list of partners, foodies, industry types and a government minister, led a private tasting on the restaurant floor of Steakhouse on the Verandah at Devon House, Tuesday evening.

With the exception of Crisp, Vintage, Meet Street & The Market, and Brunch at the Gallery, the remaining ultra all-inclusive events of 'the Caribbean's #1 urban food festival' — namely Pork Palooza, Picante, and Chopstix — received gastronomic traction from our innovative cuisiniers, acting as capable ambassadors, whose flair and talents are to be in full effect at the venues of Hope Gardens; The Ruins, Mona Visitor's Lodge at the University of West Indies, Mona; and Hope Zoo as of this Saturday.

Capitalising on the close proximity of these influential diners, the newly opened Steakhouse added their executive chef Alex D-Great — yes, that is his real name, we learn — to this mix, which closed with dessert, courtesy of pâtissier Rebecca Karram.

Paired with Sneak Taste's elegant show-and-tell were the vino selections from the Barton & Guestier, Da Luca and Banrock portfolios, distributed locally by festival sponsor Select Brands.

This year's Jamaica Food & Drink Festival kicks off this Saturday at Hope Gardens with Pork Palooza, where a 'top hog' will emerge from that evening's votes.
