Last week I sat down with Concho y Toro's Latin America Wine Ambassador Patricia Guzmán Rosales to learn a little about what it takes to represent the largest producer of wines in Latin America. Concha y Toro has been voted the “World's Most Admired Wine Brand” by an international poll of beverage industry analysts, masters of wine, consultants, winemakers, wine writers, retailers, educators and buyers from 2010 to 2013, and continues to appear on the Top 10 list.

 

Chris Reckord (CR): As you were preparing to come here, what were your expectations of the Jamaican wine market?

 

Patricia Guzman Rosales (PG): I came with an open mind with an intention to meet people and learn a little more about the culture of the country. The business of wine is about the integration of knowing your brands and connecting with people.

 

CR: Can you give us an overview of the portfolio you manage?

PG: Of course! I manage three different origins. I show the wines from Chile representative for Vińa Maipo and Concha y Toro Winery, Argentina with Trivento Winery and California with Fetzer Winery.

 

CR: What are the main segments of the market that you are focused on? Which wines for that segment ?

PG: We focus on the premium segments, because we believe in the great potential of our wines from the different parts of the world. For example, from Vińa Maipo Winery in Chile we bring great Syrahs (Limited Edition and Alto Tajamar) and Cabernet Sauvignon (Protegigo). Both are amazing representations of high-quality wines from the Maipo Valley (the best place to make Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile). In Argentina we have a great representation of the Malbec with the lines of Trivento Winery such as Eolo, Golden Reserve and Amado Sur. Of course, we have some not-so-expensive wines, eg Vińa Maipo Classics, Vitral Reserva, Trivento Reserva and Tribu, which allow consumers a peek into our world without digging too deep in their pockets.

 

CR: How did you get involved in the wine business?

PG: I have been involved in the wine business from a very early age. We are a country that produces wine! So you are always connecting with the wines... when you share with family or friends or some random moment!

But my deep connection came when I was studying at university. I remember I did a viticulture signature and I fell in love with the world of wine.. .and I start to go more into ... learning and taking experiences in Chile and in other countries that make wine like Argentina, USA, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

 

CR: Did you have an 'a-ha' wine-tasting moment?

PG: Yes! I have many different moments that I remember 'oh aha' this is an amazing and different wine... but I remember one special moment at home: We were celebrating my best friend´s birthday and his grandmother brought a bottle of red wine Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo Valley that she was keeping for almost 20 years looking for a special moment to drink. The wine was awesome with evolution. Years after, when I did my professional studies and experience, I realised that in that moment we were in front of an amazing terroir — the Maipo Valley. Now I can see how blessed we are with wines like Vińa Maipo Alto Tajamar, Limited Edition Syrah, Protegido Cabernet Sauvignon, which have amazing aging potential for more than 20 years.

 

CR: What is your preferred style of wine? Do you have a favourite wine from your portfolio?

PG: Hmm … I don't have a special style of wine. For me, the wine that you drink depends on the moment, the occasion that you are going to drink the wine and more importantly with whom you are going to celebrate!

 

CR: Fun question: Carménčre or Malbec?

PG: Both! But it depends on the moment. Both are very representative of the land, climate and culture of each country. And you know, I feel proud of them because they arrived in South America more than 150 years ago and have adapted to the land at the bottom of the world and now they can show the world what amazing wines they have become despite becoming close to being extinct.

 

CR: Your thoughts on improving the Jamaican wine scene?

PG: I think we should better position the premium wines. But, be mindful about introducing the wines to those who have never consumed wines

 

CR: Please tell us five reasons why South American wines (Chile/Argentina) are hot and why we should be drinking more of them.

PG: 1 We have the perfect conditions to make great wines.

2 We have many different kinds of soil and climate that permit us to show diverse wines.

3 In Chile, for example, we have the influence of the Pacific Ocean (cold climate) over the white wines and the Andes mountains (with the difference of temperature between day at night and the stone soil) that give to a Cabernet Sauvignon like Protegido a great character.

4 In Argentina, for example, if we go up the Andes mountain we find cold climates like Uco Valley, the place we produce, for example, the Trivento Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc, we can find a continental climate that permits us to produce a different Malbec with great quality in different parts of the country like in Luján de Cuyo or Uco Valley.

5 We have experience and we can obtain an amazing quality of wine with a convenient price. Very good relation between price and quality, awesome price/quality ratios.
