On the heels of Fontana's recent Project Natural — dedicated to celebrating the natural hair community and naturalistas of all ages, your Under The Dryer team sat down with Samantha Edwards, certified beauty consultant at Fontana, eager for her to show us some easy and fun natural hairstyles. Project Natural was in response to numerous customer queries both in-store and on the company's social media platforms.

Under The Dryer (UTD): How long have you been working with Fontana?

Samantha Edwards (SE): I've been working with Fontana since February 19, 2018.

UTD: Where and when did you get your certification?

SE: I am a certified make-up artist, but we are classified as beauty consultants at Fontana. I got my certification at College of Beauty Services in 2016.

UTD: Why is beauty your passion?

SE: I've loved make-up since I was in Grade 7 and just starting high school. I always played around with different types of make-up and hairstyles.

UTD: Tell us about your own natural hair journey.

SE: I actually had natural hair up until Grade 7. But it became too tiresome for my mom to comb it in the mornings so she decided to relax it. In 2014 I decided to transition back to my natural hair but, 10 months in, frustration hit and I went back to the relaxer. Two years ago, in February 2016, I decided to go natural once and for all. I wanted to embrace my natural hair, I was tired of the need to relax my hair and wanted to end my relationship with chemicals. I did my big chop in 2016 and have not looked back. I feel so much more like myself with my natural curls.

UTD: What is your go-to style?

SE: My go-to hairstyle is a wash and go, which usually lasts for a week-and-a-half. After a week, I either put it up in two, or keep it half-up half-down to get as much as I can out of it before my next wash day!

UTD: What are your tips for other naturalistas?

SE: Purchasing expensive products whilst in transition is totally unnecessary. Use the same products that you used on your relaxed hair. Once you stop using the harsh chemicals in the creme, your usual hair products will work just fine as your curls grow out. Also, don't expect all products to work with your hair, as everyone's hair texture is different and so everyone's hair routines are different. I love the Kurlee Belle Jelle Coconut Styling Gel for its moisture, hold and definition. My curls are bouncy but so defined!
