KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican-born retired Olympic athlete Germaine Mason died on Thursday in a motorcycle crash in East Kingston while heading home from a party in the early hours of the morning.
According to police reports, Mason lost control of the motorcycle he was travelling on about 4:20am and the vehicle ran off the road causing him to fall from it. He was pronounced dead at hospital. The athlete who represented Great Britain since 2006, and won silver for that country in high jump at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, is Jamaica's national record holder in the event.
Meanwhile, a Romanian who is said to be the mastermind behind an automated teller machine (ATM) scam was on Thursday remanded following his arrest Tuesday at a Scotiabank ATM in Half-Way-Tree. A Jamaican man was also arrested after the two were found with in excess of J$180, 000 by teams from the Half-Way-Tree and Hunts Bay CIB who were acting on information.
In other news, reputed Klansman leader Tesha Miller was fined $100 or 10 days in prison on one count of false declaration following his deportation from Bahamas on April 4. Miller pleaded guilty to one count of using a fictitious name and was given the maximum sentence available.
He was again arrested, but was released from police lock-up Thursday after a judge ordered the police to either charge or release him.
